It originated from the final issue of The Whole Earth Catalog, published in 1974. This catalog, created by Stewart Brand and his team, was a collection of tools, resources, and advice for people interested in sustainability, personal growth, and alternative lifestyles. The catalog’s mission was to offer practical advice for a new generation of thinkers, creatives, and adventurers.

The cover of the last issue featured a photograph of a rural road at dawn, symbolizing a path of possibility and new beginnings. Beneath the image, the words “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” were printed, serving as a farewell message from the catalog’s team. These words weren’t just a sign-off; they encapsulated the spirit of curiosity, the willingness to take risks, and the idea of always seeking more, never settling for comfort.

Steve Jobs, when he gave his famous commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005, referred to this quote from The Whole Earth Catalog. He explained how it inspired him during his youth, linking it to his own experiences of exploration, adventure, and innovation. The quote perfectly reflected Jobs’s own approach to life: a relentless hunger for knowledge and a willingness to make foolish mistakes in the pursuit of greatness.

马斯克的五步工作法:

1. Make requirements less dumb
   不要提太蠢的需求。尤其聪明人给的需求更是危险，因为你可能不会去质疑他;

2. Delete parts or process
   删除需求当中所有你能删除的部分和流程，后来可能也会加回来，但不超过10%，如果后来加回来的部分不到10% 证明删得还不够;

3. Simplify or Optimize
   简化和优化，Elon特別强调优化要放在第三步。很多聪明的工程师最常犯的错误，就是老是在优化根本不该存在的东西;

4. Accelerate cycle times
   加速迭代，但前三点沒有做完之前先別加速，否则只是加快了自掘坟墓的速度。注意加速的是迭代，而不是速度。迭代是一个循环，通过这个循环我们可以不停的验证当前推进的方向，并且持续的进行改进和优化;

5. Automate
   最后才是自动化。按照Elon自己说法，他一直都希望Tesla 工厂中能够有更多的工人而不是全部都由机器人来工作。自动化的弊端有三个，分别是1)高昂的成本;2)极高的出错几率;3)妨碍引入新特性。。而 Elon真正希望构建的是一个可以随时更换组件、流程、探索新特性的并行系统;
